At Home in High Park

Homeschooling Program
Drop-off or Parent-and-child
Chickadees: ages 5 – 7 (beginner)

Age groupings are flexible, and can be determined on an individual basis. Final groupings will be determined by the program coordinator.

“At Home in High Park” is for homeschoolers who love nature and are interested in learning more about the plants and animals of High Park. We learn about the natural world  through direct experience, inquiry, observation, play and stewardship action. Experienced leaders encourage the children to ask questions, nurture their sense of wonder and help them care for the ecology of High Park. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay and learn with their child.

Our activities are guided by the seasons and weather conditions. Some areas of focus will likely include:

  • Hiking to some of the wonderful natural spaces of High Park
  • Playing nature games
  • Learning about the many living things in the park
  • Planting native plants (spring and fall)
  • Removing invasive species in partnership with Toronto Urban Forestry (spring and fall)
  • Nature photography
  • Using maps and compasses for orienteering
  • Making projects for the Bowling Field such as brush piles or solitary bee nesting tubes
  • Snowshoeing (winter)

For each session, parents receive extensive learning guides that include:

  • An overview of the weekly theme
  • Pre-visit or post-visit activities to extend learning at home
  • Suggested resources (books, websites, video links, etc)
  • New vocabulary
  • A preview of the upcoming sharing circle question
