As the cold sets in, we all prepare for winter. But how do the creatures of High Park keep warm? Can beavers buy blankets? Will coyotes make hot cocoa? Do insects stay inside? Animals meet the challenges of winter in their own creative ways. Come discover some of the interesting wildlife that lives in High Park and their wacky winter habits!Note: These programs are family friendly. Not all trails we use will be stroller or wheelchair accessible. This program will be fully outdoors, with access to indoor washrooms.

Enjoy a romantic evening in nature and learn new naturalist skills! In this workshop, we will go snowshoeing by moonlight through the forest. We will then get cozy by the fire and learn about the basics of fire-building. We will end the night relaxing by the fire and enjoying roasted treats and warm drinks! Everyone is welcome to join! Note: Snowshoeing will be weather dependent. Come dressed for the weather as we will be outdoors for the duration of the workshop.

What happens beneath the ice when a pond freezes over? How do ducks stay warm all winter? Come to the pond and uncover its snowy secrets. Discover who hibernates beneath the ice and who endures the cold. This exciting one-way hike will allow us to explore parts of the park we usually aren't able to get to from the Nature Centre. Note: We will meet for this hike at the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground, south-east of High Park. More information and maps will be included in the hike reminder. These programs are family friendly. Not all trails we use will be stroller or wheelchair accessible. This program will be fully outdoors, with access to indoor washrooms.

Isn’t it frustrating when birds don’t sit still long enough for you to figure out who they are? Knowing birds’ songs would make birding so much easier and more rewarding, but there are SO many. Avian ecologist Bill McMartin will help you get started “Birding by Ear." Note: Please come dressed for the weather as we will spend part of the workshop outdoors.
