WARM UP TO WINTER!

This winter, with the generous support of Pratt and Whitney Canada and the North Face Explore Fund, the High Park Nature Centre is offering FREE program with transportation for GRADE 4 classes from identified high needs communities across Toronto.

This full day (10 am-2 pm) program will engage students with hands-on indoor and outdoor activities to bring to life the curriculum concepts of habitat and animal and plant adaptations for winter survival.

Designed to support expectations in the Habitats and Communities Science curriculum, during this program students will:

  • Discover which animals migrate, hibernate and tough it out in the Canadian winter, and the structural and behavioural adaptations that help them.
  • Investigate ways animals and insects depend on trees and plants for winter survival
  • Become animal detectives and explore High Park’s woodland habitat for animal shelters, tracks and food clues
  • Hand-feed winter birds and observe the adaptations that keep them from freezing in below zero temperatures
  • Go for a snowshoe hike (snow permitting)
  • Identify trees with medicinal properties and drink vitamin C rich pine-needle tea
  • Appreciate the wonders of winter recreation in High Park’s extensive natural areas
