Communications and Grant Writing Coordinator

Established in 1999, the High Park Nature Centre is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness and respect for nature through outdoor environmental education and community-based stewardship.

We are currently seeking a creative and enthusiastic Communications and Grant Writing Coordinator who is passionate about urban parks, nature and outdoor education. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communication skills, a strong eye for detail, experience in grant writing and an ability to manage multiple projects effectively.

Overview of Position:

The Communications and Grant Writing Coordinator will work in a team environment to support the Nature Centre’s programs and operations through marketing and fund generation. The list below outlines the major tasks related to the position; however additional tasks may be assigned as needed.



  • Develop, coordinate and monitor the HPNC’s annual communications plan to broaden reach and deepen the impact of HPNC activities;

  • Collaborate on various communications projects;

  • Manage the creation, distribution, and maintenance of all print and digital media, including:

    • Bi-weekly e-news blast for an external audience of current and past program participants, donors, members, partners, and supporters

    • Promotional posters and brochures for HPNC programs and events

    • Consistent and engaging posts and conversations on social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube

  • Manage and update content on the HPNC’s website and lead a website rebuild project;

  • Solicit and track media opportunities;

  • Maintain and enhance the HPNC’s photo library; and

  • Submit monthly reports on communications activities, engagement levels, and progress.

Grant Writing

  • Write and submit grant applications to generate funds for the organization, and maintain tracking system to ensure all deadlines are met;

  • Research, identify and develop new foundation, government and corporate prospects for the organization’s fundraising priorities;

  • Assist Executive Director with campaigns, appeals and donor-related events;

  • Work with the Office Administrator to maintain up-to-date donor database;

  • Solicit and coordinate in-kind donations as needed;

  • Prepare monthly reports on fund generation.


  • Work with Executive Director to renew “Friends of High Park Nature Centre” membership program and increase engagement in membership program;

  • Coordinate member communications and act as a point of contact for members.


  • Post-secondary degree/diploma (Communications or Fundraising considered an asset);

  • 2-3 years of professional experience;

  • Demonstrated experience with grant writing and funding requests;

  • Background in ecology or conservation is a strong asset;

  • Experience working in non-profit environment is preferred;

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Hootsuite and all social media platforms;

  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS is an asset;

  • Experience working with databases or CRM software;

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and strong attention to detail;

  • Demonstrated ability for effective teamwork as well as independent work;

  • Ability to prioritize among competing goals to execute on deadlines; and

  • Positive, professional approach with strong work ethic and initiative.

Position Salary: TBD, Commensurate with experience

Position Details:

This is a one year contract at 37.5 hours per week. Weekend and evening work may be required. The ability to work from home is negotiable.
