Trees of High Park (2-part Workshop)
From towering pines to exotic dawn redwoods, High Park is blessed with a wide variety of tree species both native and non-native. Learn to identify many of these species and discover some of the intriguing stories associated with them. If you’ve got a hankering for hemlocks or a yearning for yews, this workshop is for you. The majority of our time will be spent outdoors as we roam the park seeking trees of all kinds. Your instructor will be Richard Aaron, a popular naturalist and educator who has done many programs for the Nature Centre over the years.
In this workshop, you will:
- learn to identify dozens of species of trees and tall shrubs
- practice using several different field guides (provided for use)
- discover which tree features are the most useful in different seasons
- learn how to tell similar-looking species apart
- be introduced to lots of interesting tree lore (native uses, living fossils, and more)
The outdoor component of this workshop will take place entirely on High Park trails that are considered moderate in length and terrain.
