Emily Macleod, enthusiastic entomologist, will lead you through the fascinating world living just outside your doorstep. This workshop is designed to inspire people feeling bug-love OR bug-fear. This summer, replace your fears with knowledge and understanding of the micro world of insects. Starting indoors, Emily will teach you the bug basics. In the afternoon you will hike through the forests and fields of High Park to find insects in their natural habitats and learn more about their wonderfully secret lives.

You will learn:

  • amazing adaptations and life histories of bees & beetles, arachnids & ants and so many more
  • anatomy of insects and arachnids
  • how to identify insects including the most common bees in Toronto
  • how to observe insect behaviour
  • how insects and arachnids fit into our urban ecology
  • how to begin identifying insects by family
  • where and how to find local species of interest
  • how to separate facts from myths

Instructor Bio:
Emily MacLeod is an expert in animal behaviour, having earned her PhD at the University of Toronto studying mating the habits of black widow spiders. She trained as an entomologist during the course of her BSc at the University of Guelph. She loves looking for insects and spiders, and figuring out why they do what they do.
